Important informations to prepare your trip

Luckily, all citizens of the world can come and visit Costa Rica.  

To enter Costa Rica, you will be asked :

  • A travel insurance 
  • A valid passport 
  • A transportation ticket (plane, bus
) proving that you will leave the territory before your visa expires.

  • How to get here :

    Traveling from San José to Santa Teresa in Costa Rica offers several options, each with its advantages in terms of time, cost, and comfort. Here are the main options available:

    1. By Car or 4×4

      • Duration: About 5 to 6 hours.
      • Details:
        • You can rent a car (preferably a 4×4 due to unpaved roads and occasionally challenging conditions).
        • From San JosĂ©, drive to Puntarenas, where you’ll take a ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya to Paquera.
        • Once in Paquera, drive about 1.5 hours to Santa Teresa via Tambor and Cobano.
      • Cost: Around $20-30 USD for the ferry (including the car), plus vehicle rental and fuel costs.
    2. By Bus and Ferry

      • Duration: About 6 to 7 hours.
      • Details:
        • From San JosĂ©, take a direct bus to Puntarenas (about 2 hours).
        • Then, take the ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera (about 1.5 hours).
        • In Paquera, catch another bus to Cobano, then a final bus to Santa Teresa.
      • Cost: Approximately $15-20 USD for the entire journey.
      • Comfort: This is the cheapest option but also the longest, with several transfers.
    3. Shuttle

      • Duration: About 5 to 6 hours.
      • Details:
        • Private or shared shuttles connect San JosĂ© directly to Santa Teresa, combining road travel and the ferry.
        • You’re picked up from your hotel or the airport in San JosĂ© and taken directly to Santa Teresa.
      • Cost: Around $50-60 USD for a shared shuttle, more for a private one.
      • Comfort: This is a very comfortable and stress-free option, ideal if you don’t want to drive.
    4. Domestic Flight

      • Duration: About 45 minutes of flight + 45 minutes by road.
      • Details:
        • Take a domestic flight from Juan SantamarĂ­a Airport (SJO) in San JosĂ© to Tambor with airlines like Sansa Airlines or Aerobell.
        • From Tambor, a taxi or shuttle will take you to Santa Teresa (about 45 minutes).
      • Cost: Between $80 and $120 USD for the flight, plus the taxi transfer (about $30-50 USD).
      • Comfort: This is the fastest option but also the most expensive.
    5. By Taxi or Uber

      • Duration: Around 5 to 6 hours.
      • Details:
        • You can also take a taxi or Uber from San JosĂ© to Santa Teresa, including the ferry crossing at Puntarenas.
      • Cost: More expensive than other options, ranging from $150 to $300 USD depending on the company and season.
    6. Water Taxi (via Jaco)

      • Duration: Around 4 hours.
      • Details:
        • Take a bus or shuttle from San JosĂ© to Jaco (about 2 hours).
        • From there, take a direct water taxi to Montezuma or Santa Teresa (about 1 hour).
        • This is a quick option but weather-dependent.
